Courtesy of OverNet Data, you could be doing buddy locating on WLANs before you know - the technology was recently tested at Microsoft's EMEA Mobility Developers Conference in the UK.
Wireless location services are predicted to become one of the killer apps of the future in conjunction with always-on wireless networks - but to date, few solutions have been trialed, and even fewer actually put in place. One that recently was tested for the first time is OverNet Data's ConfNET application for conference delegates, which went through an ordeal at Microsoft's first ever EMEA Mobility Developer Conference in the UK in April.
 | Find conference buddies with OverNet Data's ConfNET
| Created in conjunction with Microsoft, OverNet Data’s software includes Buddy Locator, an application that provides the location of delegates at a conference venue to users of Pocket PC 2002 devices using the WLAN connection of a device running the software. Utilizing the WLAN network for both positioning and communications, Buddy Locator enables users to receive alerts when their colleagues arrive, and tells them where their colleagues are within a conference venue.
ConfNET was recently deployed and trialed at the first ever Microsoft EMEA Mobility Developer Conference which took place in London, April, 17-18th. Prior to the conference, OverNet Data said the application would be installed on up to 1000 conference Pocket PC devices, and would also provide delegates with real-time conference news updates during the two-day event - unfortunately, no exact usage numbers were released after the conference.
OverNet Data was also recently appointed to the Microsoft Early Adopter ISV Programme for the newly launched Microsoft Smartphone 2002 and Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition software platforms, which could indicate that the company is working on similar solutions for those platforms. Meanwhile, you'll have to wait for the next big conference to come along to try it out - if the one you pick has decided to install it, that is.
