Nokia is showcasing its "Life Goes Mobile" theme at Nokia Connection 2002, a 3-day event in Singapore which is also the scene for the unveiling of Nokia's fourth color handset.
The first item on the agenda at Nokia Connection 2002 was the unveiling of the new Nokia 6610, which looks like an alternative and toned down design of the previously announced Nokia 7210. The phone features MMS, tri-band (GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz), J2ME support, an integrated FM radio, handsfree speaker, a 12-bit (4096 colors) display, polyphonic ringtones and a 4-way navipad, and is targeted more towards business professionals in terms of design (exchangable covers will be available though).
 | Nokia's 6610 is essentially the same phone as the Nokia 7210 - in a different package
| The phone is scheduled for commercial availability in the Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe markets during the third quarter of 2002. The Americas market could however be cheated out of the 6610, as Nokia rather cryptically stated that the phone was targeted for the three prior mentioned markets, and would be available there - which could either mean Nokia has, highly unlikely, not decided what to do as of yet, or that the phone simply won't be marketed in the Americas. The expected unsubsidized retail price of the Nokia 6610 will be approximately 450 EUR.
The 6610 comes with some pre-installed Java applications including a Converter (for currencies, temperature, weight and other measures), a Portfolio Manager (to track stocks and other securities) and J2ME games. The phone uses the Nokia Series 40 user interface, which is optimized for smaller handsets with color displays and navigates in a manner that's more similar to the Series 60 interface of the Nokia 7650 than the traditional Nokia Simplex UI found in previous handsets from the company. The Nokia 7210 will be the first product to sport the Series 40 user interface when it arrives later this summer.
Nokia also offered guests at the event a preview of the enhanced Club Nokia site with new entertainment channels offering content in areas such as music, games, movies and cartoons. The revamped Club Nokia site will come to Nokia phone users in Singapore by next month, and to other markets in the region subsequently with content tailored to the region.
Still confident of their target of more than 100 million J2ME enabled terminals sold by 2003, the 6610 features dynamic memory allocation which allows for the storage of up to six J2ME applications of up to 64 Kb each - more if applications are smaller, less if more space is allocated to functionality such as MMS messages. Sadly, J2ME applications on the 6610 cannot access the communication capabilities, which means J2ME applications such as instant messaging applications and multiplayer games will be unable to run on the 6610.
Like the Nokia 7210, the the Nokia 6610 sports a Pop-Port connector, which will be a primary interface connector in Nokia phones in the future. It has been designed for the mobile environment and supports functionality such as digital accessory identification, stereo audio or fast data connectivity. The Pop-Port also provides USB connectivity, a point Nokia stressed when asked whether there would be a Bluetooth Pop-Port accessory for the 6610; a question to which the answer was no.
At the event, also making its first appearance is the "Nokia Connecting" design travel exhibit conceptualised by the Nokia Design team based in US. Futuristic in vision and according to Nokia "aimed at invoking the sensorial experience", the design exhibit shows the limitless possibilities of communication in the far future, when, as Nokia puts it, "technology comes alive yet blends harmoniously to our physical form and fundamental human needs to empower our lives with the freedom of true mobility."
