By Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 18 June 2002   E-mail story  Print story
After months of anticipation, Toshiba's new e740 product line has arrived in the shape of an XScale-powered Pocket PC that comes with integrated 802.11b wireless connectivity.

Originally uncovered as early as in late February by infoSync, Toshiba's new e740 has been the buzz of the Pocket PC community ever since. With its introduction, the market is finally seeing the first Pocket PC available to use an XScale processor - and if as that wasn't enough, it's got integrated 802.11b wireless connectivity as well.

Toshiba's new e740 isn't only the first XScale-powered handheld on the market, but the first consumer handheld with integrated 802.11b connectivity as well
The Toshiba e740 is Toshiba's latest addition to its line of Pocket PC handhelds, with its predecessors being the e570 and e310 models, of which the latter was only recently launched. In addition to its built-in 802.11b wireless connectivity and 400 MHz XScale PXA250 processor, the e740 comes with a 3.5" 16-bit TFT display, CompactFlash Type II and SD Card expansion slots, 64 MB of RAM and 32 MB ROM.

An optional Toshiba Expansion Pack attaches to the bottom of the e740 providing a VGA out port for conducting presentations, as well as an USB port to connect to USB native devices such as a full-size keyboard. An optional High Capacity battery will also be available to increase the battery capacity further in addition to the already integrated Lithium-ion battery, sliding onto the back of the Toshiba Pocket PC e740. Both the High Capacity battery and Toshiba Expansion Pack can remain connected to the e740 while the device is in the cradle.

In addition to the now rather standard components that make up Pocket PC devices, The Toshiba e740 also contains ATI's new IMAGEON 100 graphics acceleration chip, which also powers the Toshiba Expansion Pack that was previously mentioned. Among other features, ATI claims the IMAGEON 100 is the first video graphics product for handhelds that offers an advanced 2D graphics engine, and decoding of MPEG-4 (the standard for wireless streaming video). Additionally, the chip is said to provide JPEG decoding that scales to higher resolutions panels with no visual artifacts, as well as power management to optimize power consumption without compromising performance.

The Toshiba Pocket PC e740 is priced at $599 USD with a one-year standard limited parts and labor warranty and is available at computer superstores, consumer electronic stores and mass merchandisers, Toshiba's online shop and Toshiba's traditional distribution channels, VARs and mail-order partners throughout the U.S.
