XScale iPAQs arrive
By Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 24 June 2002   E-mail story  Print story
Two models in HP's new iPAQ H3900 series arrive, powered by a 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA250 processor and with a few improvements such as SDIO support and an enhanced IR port.

As expected, the new HP today announced the first handheld product since the merger of Compaq and HP; the new XScale PXA250-powered iPAQ H3900 series, with only a few changes - albeit major - from the iPAQ H3800 series. And even though Compaq is now officially a part of the new HP, the device series that once made the Pocket PC so popular is still being called Compaq iPAQ.

The iPAQ H3900 series comes with the same external design as the H3800 series, but features a new transflective, front-lit color screen that according to HP should provide better viewing of pictures and crisper text. The screen, when compared to that of an iPAQ H3800, is notably brighter (as seen on the picture above) and should thus provide users with a better viewing experience than the relatively dark screen of the H3800 series.

In addition to using a new screen technology, the H3900 series also contains a Secure Digital Input/Output (SDIO) expansion slot, opening up the use of more advanced, non-storage expansion cards in SD Card format, providing for instance Bluetooth connectivity.

There will initially be two models in the H3900 series, both of which will be using the 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA250 processor and mainly the same hardware, although a couple of differences obviously exist. The iPAQ Pocket PC H3950 comes with 32 MB of Flash ROM (read-only memory) and has an estimated U.S. street price of $649 USD, while the iPAQ Pocket PC H3970 comes with integrated Bluetooth capabilities and 48 MB of Flash ROM, at an estimated U.S. street price of $749 USD. Both models include 64 MB of RAM.

Software-wise, the H3900 series also has a thing or two in store; an integrated Nevo application provides universal infrared remote functionality through the enhanced IR port found in the H3900 series, allowing users to control of infrared-equipped audio and video equipment in the office and at home. Users can customize rooms, set up profiles and personalize their iPAQ to control up to 20 categories of audio/visual and home electronics devices. In addition, the iPAQ File Store will on the H3970 series provide up to 20 MB of permanent file storage while the H3950 provides 6 MB.

According to HP, models begin shipping this week and are expected to be widely available in the U.S. in July.

HP also announced the availability of the HP Jornada 728 Handheld PC with 64 MB of standard memory - twice the amount of memory as the previous model. The device offers a built-in 56k modem, a keyboard 76 percent of full size, built-in PCMCIA type II and CF type I slots and runs on a 206 MHz Intel SA1110 processor. The estimated U.S. street price for the HP Jornada 728 will be $999 USD.
