The Jornada 928, for long facing an uncertain future has now been confirmed as launching in Europe later this summer. Oh, and you'll be able to chat with it too, courtesy of Fonix.
While the future of HP's Jornada 928 WDA, based on Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition operating system, has been mildly put blurry for some time following conflicting reports from a number of sources, the device has now finally been confirmed to be launching in Europe later this summer. And that's not all; you'll be able to talk to it, and it'll talk back - all courtesy of Fonix speech technology embedded in the Texas Instruments OMAP platform found in the Jornada 928.
Upon arrival, the Jornada 928 will offer Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-To- Speech (TTS) capabilities, or more specifically enable users to use their voice to navigate through their devices, to launch and close applications, and to access and dial contacts, all with no voice training required. Other current applications from Fonix for Pocket PC 2002 include one that reads the time out loud at user-defined intervals, one that reads upcoming appointments and tasks aloud, one that launches applications on the device and the most recently launched Fonix iSpeak 2.0 which reads text stored in a variety of formats out loud.
Texas Instruments' OMAP platform on which the Fonix speech technology can be integrated is specifically aimed at wireless processing to deliver voice and multimedia enhanced applications for 2.5G and 3G wireless phones, PDAs, and other advanced mobile Internet appliances. The platform has been selected by Hewlett-Packard, Nokia, Ericsson, Sony, Palm, NEC, Fujitsu, Sendo, HTC, and others for the companies' 2.5 and 3G wireless devices.
Hewlett-Packard's Jornada 928 Wireless Digital Assistant (WDA) was stated by Fonix as slated for release in Europe in the summer of 2002.
