Apple moves to synchronize

Apple's new iSync will allow synchronization of address books and calendars between Mac computers and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, Palm OS devices and the Apple iPod.
Apple has so far not shown too much interest in making its products talk to the slew of increasingly popular mobile phone and handhelds on the market. Signaling a change in the company's approach towards such devices, Apple today showed off a new product called iSync at Macworld Expo in New York that will allow address book and calendar information to be synchronized between Macs and a select few devices.
Based on the SyncML standard, iSync will allow owners of Bluetooth-enabled Sony Ericsson phones including the T68i, T68, T39 and R520 models to synchronize information over Bluetooth with Macs running Apple's upcoming version 10.2 of OS X, also known as 'Jaguar'. In addition, owners of Palm OS handhelds will be able to perform the same actions - and so will owners of Apple iPods.

"Cell phones are the world's most popular digital device, but up until now, there's been almost no cooperation between them and personal computers," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iSync lets users have the same up-to-date address book and calendars everywhere - on their Mac and in their pocket."
Apple also announced that the company is working with Cingular Wireless and Sony Ericsson to offer Mac customers the first easy-to-use, integrated "Mac to Mobile" solution, although no further information about what consumers can expect to come from this collaboration was disclosed.
iSync will be available as a free download starting this September and requires Mac OS X version 10.2.
