HanDBase 3.0 includes a revamped database program, improved synchronization, a forms designer, and optional ODBC drivers.
DDH Software is out to become the MS Access of the PDA world with the released version 3.0 of their database application HanDBase, for both Palm OS and PocketPC. In addition to a revamped handheld application, the new application comes in three versions, ranging from a personal database system to a multi-user setup for teams with desktop database synchronization, to a full ODBC hookup with database creation wizards.
 | HanDBase now sports a slick new interface. That pop-up menu is actually animated.
| The base version, HanDBase Plus, includes both the handheld application and a Windows version. The included conduit provides record-wise synchronization between the two, just as the conduits for the PIM apps do. Both have also been extensively rewritten, and the now includes full color support and a drastically cleaned up interface. The Palm OS version also now includes VFS support for card access.
HanDBase Pro adds several features aimed at mobile teams of workers. First, it allows users in the field to synchronize databases directly to each other over infrared or Bluetooth. For example, doctors or nurses changing shifts need only synchronize the outgoing physician's device with the incoming physician's device to bring the incoming physician up to date on the status of patients in the ward. It also includes a forms-based application designer, to create cleaner front ends to a database than simple spreadsheet-like displays. HanDBase Pro also includes sync conduits for MS Access on Windows and FileMaker on the Macintosh, two of the most widely used desktop personal database applications.
The final level, HanDBase Enterprise, adds an ODBC driver so that site managers can develop conduits to synchronize the handheld application with an SQL server database such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, or MySQL.
The new version of HanDBase isn't cheap. HanDBase Plus costs $29.99 USD, expensive for a handheld application. The Professional edition costs $39.99 USD, while the Enterprise edition will set you back $99.99 USD. Registered users of earlier versions of HanDBase can upgrade to HanDBase Plus 3.0 for free, and to the Professional edition for $14.99 USD.
