Another device is about to join the low-end market Pocket PC where Toshiba's e310 has reigned supreme so far; the ViewSonic V35 is lighter than all, and packs 300 MHz.
Mostly known for its display products but also some portable computing products, ViewSonic has now entered the coveted low-end Pocket PC fray where Toshiba's e310 so far has reigned supreme - with the possible exception of the Audiovox Maestro which is only available in the U.S. ViewSonic's new V35 is not only cheap and light, but packs more punch than its competitors thanks to its XScale processor.
 | The ViewSonic V35 challenges Toshiba and Dell in the low-end Pocket PC space - if one can call it low-end anymore
| Powered by a 300 MHz Intel XScale PXA250 processor, the V35 packs some additional punch over its competitors - mainly the Toshiba e310 and the upcoming Dell Pocket PC to be launched later this year, but consumers are likely to take little notice of the increased speed since neither the Pocket PC platform nor many applications have been optimized for XScale processors.
In addition to a faster processor, the V35 also offers one more thing which is uncommon in the low-end market; 64 MB of RAM. Coupled with a 3.5" 16-bit transflective TFT display and an SD Card expansion slot with SDIO support, the total weight of the V35 is a trim 4.2 ounces or 119 g - less than any other Pocket PC to date, and even less than some Palm OS devices.
The V35 will according to ViewSonic ship with a custom Microsoft PowerPoint file viewer and a digital image viewer application, and sell for $299 USD. To be available in the U.S. in November through national and regional retailers, authorized resellers, distributors and mail order with a one-year warranty, the V35 will also find its way to Europe later this year although pricing and availability information was not available at the time of writing.
An additional hi-res picture of the ViewSonic V35 is available on the following page.
