Acer to do wire-free PDA charging

Sick and tired of having to plug in your handheld to charge it? Courtesy of new technology from MobileWise, Acer promises to deliver models that charge wire-free in 2003.
If you're one of those who have grown tired from having to plug in your handheld, mobile phone or even laptop every time you need to charge one or the other, chances are you'll love a new technology developed by MobileWise. To be deployed in laptops and handhelds from Acer in 2003, the technology allows battery-operated appliances to charge merely by placing them on top of a special pad.
Recently introduced as the first application of its wire-free electric power technology, the Wire-Free-Electricity Base is a flat surface which resembles a small desk blotter calendar. Once a MobileWise-enabled device is placed anywhere on the Base, it will be powered and charged, as if it is plugged to an electric outlet. The Wire-free Electricity Base's power delivery counterpart, the Wire-Free-Electricity Adapter, integrates into a mobile device, enabling the mobile device to draw power from the Wire-free Electricity Base.
According to MobileWise, the Wire-Free-Electricity Base is as safe to use as a mouse pad - with no concerns about liquid or food spills. It's even safe to place metallic or magnetic objects on it, emits no harmful radiation, and causes no radio interference says the company.
Acer is poised to become the first major computer manufacturer to incorporate the technology, and aims to deliver MobileWise equipped notebooks and PDAs in the market in the first half of 2003 - but unfortunately no further details were provided on what models the company would deliver and whether there would be any drawbacks in terms of added weight or bulk.
