T-Mobile isn't the only U.S. carrier offering a Pocket PC Phone Edition device any longer; AT&T Wireless has laid its eyes on Siemens' new SX56. But doesn't that look like...
In one fell swoop, Siemens has introduced its new SX56 Pocket PC which will be AT&T Wireless' to exclusively market in the U.S. for the time being, providing T-Mobile with a bit of competition. And if you think the Siemens SX56 looks a lot like the T-Mobile MDA, well, then you're right.
 | Siemens' new SX56 is an exact hardware clone of the T-Mobile MDA
| Based on the same hardware reference design as the T-Mobile MDA, namely the Spaceneedle from HTC - which incidentally is the cousin of the Wallaby reference design which the O2 XDA is based upon, the Siemens SX56 is a Pocket PC Phone Edition that for all sakes and measures is an exact clone of the hardware of the T-Mobile MDA.
The 900/1900 MHz GSM SX56 Pocket PC Phone, as it's being called, will be offered by Siemens in an enterprise version and a small office/home office (SOHO), consumer version. Apparently, both editions will sport the same hardware - a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 32 MB RAM, 12-bit reflective TFT display, as well as support for GPRS packet data and SMS messages. Other features include speakerphone capabilities, and vibrating alert.
Optional accessories include a folding keyboard, a thumb keyboard, USB cable and 2.5 mm stereo headset with microphone, and the memory of the device can also be expanded through its SD/MMC card expansion slot. According to Siemens, the SX56 Pocket PC Phone provides up to 150 hours of standby time, 3.5 hours of talk time and 15 hours of PDA time via its built-in, rechargeable Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery.
Enterprise versions are available now through AT&T Wireless as part of AT&T Wireless WorkWare solution suite. A SOHO/consumer oriented version will be available at AT&T Wireless stores and select national retailers in the coming weeks, and will come equipped with AT&T Wireless Office Online software that allows access to corporate e-mail, calendar, and contact lists. Retail pricing for the consumer version is set to $549.99 USD.
