Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX
By Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 14 October 2002   E-mail story  Print story
The new Pocket LOOX is one of the most sought after Pocket PCs nowadays - and Jørgen Sundgot gives you his take on one of the most powerful and versatile devices yet.

When it comes to handhelds, Fujitsu Siemens doesn't have much of a track record. Sure, there's the Siemens SX45 series to draw from, but that was never a major success and was even weighed and found too light to be of particular interest by this very publication. That just makes for a more interesting backdrop then, since the company's Pocket LOOX is at the time of writing one of the most powerful and versatile Pocket PCs on the market - and in fact has just one real competitor.

LOOX good, doesn't it?
I spy with my little eye...

A Pocket LOOX, a USB synchronization cable, a two-part charger, a CD containing manuals and additional software, a nylon slip-case and a spare stylus. Those are the contents of the box the LOOX came in, and I'll go on record and say that I love companies that include spare styluses - not that I've ever lost one but it's just so handy if you do - and two-part chargers since it's easy to swith to another plug if you're traveling abroad, and you avoid big, clunky all-in-one plugs.

Hardware-wise, the Pocket LOOX is quite a robust device. Its plastic chassis is ergonomically shaped - more than one can say for most handhelds, but in doing so Fujitsu Siemens might have caused a few problems for lefties - and also provides good grip despite what looks like a slippery surface.

On the upper left side of the handheld, we'll first find the IR port, closely followed by the ergonomically placed jog dial, the Fujitsu Siemens Speed Menu hardware shortcut button, an the SD/MMC card expansion slot. Moving onto the bottom of the handheld, we'll find a DC in plug, the serial/USB connector, a hatch where the battery on/off switch hides behind to perform hard resets, and nothing else.

On the right side of the handheld, Fujitsu Siemens scores extra points for placing a hardware switch button at the top to enable or disable the integrated Bluetooth Class I radio of the LOOX, which offers a range of up to 100 meters - surpassing all other Pocket PCs with integrated Bluetooth. Just below, we'll find the always-present voice recorder hardware shortcut button.
