mMode users now have access to new games from Sega, can Yahoo! Messenger users, and can download music, too. And they can do so from Motorola's new GSM/GPRS phone, too. AT&T Wireless marches forward.
AT&T Wireless is beefing up their mMode service with new new instant messaging services, new games, and a new supported phone.
In a deal with Yahoo!, Yahoo! Messenger users can now send messages to text messaging users on AT&T Wireless' mMode wireless network. The service works even if the mMode user is not a Yahoo! Messenger user. The service also allows for the phone and Yahoo! account to share "friends" lists. AT&T already interoperates with the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) network. The service is available at no additional cost to all current users with 2-way text messaging capable phones, although standard text messaging charges still apply.

Gaming house Sega, which recently pulled out of the hardware business to focus on producing games for other platforms, has also announced that they will be porting many of their titles to AT&T Wireless mobile phones. "With industry experts predicting that the number of wireless gamers will quadruple in the next three years, we are working to form partnerships with leading telecommunications providers that will allow us to bring Sega content to an untapped market," said Fred Huey, Chief Operating Officer of Sega Mobile. Among the first titles from Sega will be Sega Monkey Ball, Sega Soccer Slam, and Sega Fast Lane. All three will be available directly on the menu of supported phones and can be downloaded with a few key taps. The game purchased will be billed directly to the user's monthly AT&T Wireless invoice.
In yet another content push, Warner Music Group, a division of TimeWarner, a division of AOL/TimeWarner, will be offering music-related downloads available to mMode subscribers. Users will be able to access music clips, artist news, tour dates, and artist images, on their phone, and purchase ring tonges and traditional CDs. It is the first time one of the major music distributors has offered such a comprehensive service through a wireless carrier. The agreement includes content from several Warner sublabels, including Atlantic, Elektra, Warner Bros., Maverick, Lava and Rhino Records. (All are wholely-owned subsidiaries of Warner and AOL/TimeWarner.)
Of course, the above features require phone hardware able to support it. Enter the latest phone supported by AT&T Wireless, the Motorola T720. The T720 is a GSM/GPRS flip-phone with a color screen, Java J2ME support, and WAP support. It also supports Enhansed Messaging Service, which lets users attach tunes and animated icons to text messages sent to other EMS-capable phones. It also sports a polyphonic speaker with support for pholyphonic ring tones, or as Motorola calls them "ring tunes". AT&T Wireless has several hundred "ring tunes" available for download at $1.99 USD each, plus data transfer costs. The T720 also includes aa two-line external caller-ID display, PIM functionality, voice-activated dialing, menu shortcuts, voice recorder, VibraCall(R) alert, interchangeable covers and wireless modem capabilities. It will be available nationwide in the US by the end of October for $299 USD.
