Research In Motion has released a pair of new Blackberries, the 6710 and 6720, adding an integrated microphone and speaker to an already impressive list of features.
Research In Motion has released two new versions of their Blackberry wireless data handheld, the Blackberry 6710 for North America, Europe and Asia Pacific and the Blackberry 6720 for just Europe and Asia Pacific.
 | The Blackberry 6710 offers an always-on GSM/GPRS connection worldwide
|
Both models run on GSM/GPRS networks. The 6710 runs at 900 or 1900 MHz frequencies while the 6720 runs at 900 or 1800 MHz. The Java-based devices offer email, SMS, browser, and PIM functions. Both models also include phone support with integrated speaker and microphone. RIM's previous GSM Blackberry devices required an ear-bud jack in order to make phone calls. The new devices uses the same grayscale screen as their predecessors and runs on a removeable/rechargeable Lithium Ion battery.
Both devices have the same general formfactor of their predecessors, measuring 121 x 76 x 17 mm and weighing 137 grams. The antenna is fully internal, and is "always on" providing continual connection to the network. Both devices include RIM's standard thumb board for typing. Both the thumb board and screen are backlit for night useage, and there is also a scroll wheel on the right. It runs Java 2 ME for application support, and comes with 1 MB of SRAM and 8 MB of Flash to support installable apps.
The first carrier to support the new models is Rogers AT&T Wireless in Canada. Rollouts in other regions are expected soon. The device will cost $749 CDN through Rogers.
