The GSM/GPRS module for Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX has been canceled - but owners need not fear; a tri-band CompactFlash replacement manufactured by a 3rd party is on its way.
For some customers, one of the major incentives to purchase a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX over other models on the market has been the long promised GSM/GPRS clip-on module that would turn the LOOX into a fully fledged Pocket PC Phone Edition device - complete with a software upgrade. Not so any longer though, since Fujitsu Siemens has now canceled the clip-on module, and is going to provide a CompactFlash card as a replacement.
The change in strategy has been confirmed by a Fujitsu Siemens representative, who also said the new CompactFlash solution will be manufactured by a 3rd party and provide tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS whereas Fujitsu Siemens' own module only provided dual-band 900/1800 MHz GSM/GPRS. A likely candidate to deliver the new card, which could end up being branded as a Fujitsu Siemens product, is Audiovox, which is currently the only manufacturer to have such an accessory commercially available.

Whether those who already have bought the Pocket LOOX will react positively to Fujitsu Siemens' change of strategy is a question that is yet to be answered; despite gaining extra functionality, chances are some users will react to having the CompactFlash expansion slot of their LOOX occupied whenever they want wireless connectivity enabled.
According to the Fujitsu Siemens representative, the CompactFlash card will be available in January but information was not yet available neither as to whether it will tie in with Pocket PC Phone Edition or use software provided by the 3rd party manufacturer, nor regarding the expected price.
