Sendo goes Symbian, dumps Microsoft

In a move that's certain to raise eyebrows, British mobile phone manufacturer has licensed Nokia's Series 60 platform, and is canceling the Sendo Z100 based on Smartphone 2002.
British mobile phone manufacturer Sendo today announced that the company has decided to license Series 60 Platform from Nokia for its smart phone category, joining the ranks of Matsushita, Samsung, Siemens and Nokia. Simultaneously, the company has also announced that it is canceling its efforts related to the Smartphone 2002-based Sendo Z100, and has terminated all development related to the platform.
Sendo, headquartered in the United Kingdom, started shipping its first terminals to operator customers in Europe and Asia in May 2001. The company is now shipping five products in over twenty countries in Europe and Asia, with the USA soon to follow, and has over the past year gained much attention through being the first manufacturer that actively began developing a product based on Microsoft's Smartphone 2002 platform.
According to an announcement on Sendo's website, the company has now terminated its Smartphone development program utilising the Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 software, and as a result will not be shipping the Z100 Smartphone. Going on to say the decision has been very difficult for Sendo, the company says it is pleased to announce the licensing of Nokia's Series 60 platform for its Smartphone category.
Although the Sendo Z100 was never made commercially available, a number of developers have purchased development kits for the device. Sendo did not comment on whether it would reimburse developers, nor at what time the company is planning to bring out a device based on the Series 60 platform - except for a general comment pointing towards 2003.
