Low-end iPAQ H1910 sees light of day

HP follows the trend and goes after the low-end market, and does so with style. The new iPAQ H1910 features a 200 MHz XScale processor, 64 MB RAM and an SD/MMC Card expansion slot.
While the official launch won't take place until COMDEX, the cat is out of the bag for Hewlett-Packard's new iPAQ H1910 Pocket PC; aimed at the U.S. market initially, Hewlett-Packard has provided specifications and an early glimpse at how the company's entry into the low-end market will look. With the H1910, HP joins a growing number of companies including Toshiba, Viewsonic and Dell that have brought out feature-packed yet cheap handhelds.

The H1910 boasts an Intel XScale processor, but unlike any other low-end models it will not be running at speeds greater than 200 MHz - a choice which may sound surprising, but given the lack of optimizations in the operating system as well as applications for the platform for XScale processors, customers are unlikely to notice any major difference in performance compared with "faster" models for the time being.
That's not all, though, as the H1910 packs 64 MB of RAM and a 3.5" 16-bit transflective TFT display of iPAQ H3900 series fame. Transflective displays have grown increasingly popular with Pocket PC manufacturers recently due to the improved quality of such displays, and also contribute to the overall low price of $299 USD.
Other features include an SD/MMC Card expansion slot, as well as a rechargeable, exchangeable Lithium ion battery - a new move for the iPAQ series, likely to have been inspired by the HP Jornada line. Another new move that might not be as appreciated by users as the battery, however, is a design that is incompatible with Compaq's system of expansion sleeves for the iPAQ series. While the H5400 series, to be unveiled later, retains compatibility with this system, the H1910 sheds it and has no apparent replacement for expansion except from its built-in expansion slot mentioned previously.
Size-wise, the H1910 is smaller than most of its competitors as is appropriate for a low-end model; the device measures 4.5" x 2.8" x 0.5" (11.4 x 7.1 x 1.3 cm) and weighs 4.2 ounces (119 g).
