Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia's most recent addition to its U.S. line-up is the 3585i, which combines a low-end type monochrome display with high-end 1xRTT and GPS support.
Nokia's newest CDMA handset takes a slightly unusual approach to the formula of making mobile phones; albeit most of the features in the handset can be classified as low-end, it also incorporates high-end capabilities with its support for CDMA2000 1xRTT and GPS. Nokia says the model combines the features most desired by consumers, and throws in CDMA 800/1900MHz/AMPS for good measure.
 | The 3585i is Nokia's first model to feature integrated GPS capabilities
| Expected to ship during the first quarter of 2003, the Nokia 3585i is Nokia's first phone - and also one of extremely few phones on a world basis - with integrated GPS capabilities, allowing operators in the U.S. to seriously start considering location-based services. Together with CDMA2000 1xRTT support for data transfers of up to 144 Kbps, these two are untypical features in a phone whose other specifications are most reminiscent of low-end phones.
The design of the phone and its ability to use exchangeable covers are traits typical for other models in the youth-targeted 3500 series, down to its support for glow-in-the dark covers and 'active' covers with embedded electroluminescent graphics that light in rhythm with the ring tone. Along with standard downloadable ring tones, the 3585i also supports polyphonic MIDI ring tunes that can be downloaded from a PC via an optional data cable.
Another typical youth trait is the monochrome display of the phone, with a user interface controlled by four-way scroll keys allowing users to traverse common phone functions as well as browse WAP sites. Other features include voice tags which can be added to 25 of the most used numbers for one-touch voice access, as well as abuilt-in voice memo recorder which lets owners record up to one minute of voice.
Four games come embedded in the phone, including Kart Racing, Space Impact 3, Bumper and Snake 2, and there is also support for 2-way text messaging. The standard 950 mAh Lithium ion battery of the phone should according to Nokia provide from almost 3 to 5 hours of digital talk time and up to 9 days of digital standby time, all in a package weighing in at 4.1 ounces an measuring 4.6" x 1.9" x 0.9".
An additional hi-res picture of the Nokia 3585i is available on the following page.
