First international EDGE call

The first international call using EDGE handsets was recently demonstrated at the EDGE Operators' Forum seminar in São Paulo held in conjunction with the 3GSM Americas conference.
Wireless operators and vendors dedicated to EDGE wireless technology shared the latest developments in service models and equipment with Latin American operators and regulators during a high-level EDGE Operators' Forum seminar in São Paulo on December 3rd, held in conjunction with the 3GSM Americas conference. Over 60 guests attended the meeting, representing GSM and TDMA operators from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and the United States.
During the meeting, forum members discussed the latest plans for deployment, strategy, and marketing of EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) in existing networks. Additionally, the first international call using EDGE handsets was demonstrated to press and analysts attending the conference.
Representing the vendor community, Alan Hadden, President of GSA commented, "Almost all GSM infrastructure being shipped today is EDGE-enabled and requires just a fairly simple upgrade to deploy EDGE. Most all GSM infrastructure vendors are committed to EDGE technology. On November 18th, even before the launch of a single commercial network, Nokia announced their multi-band EDGE phone for the 850, 1800 and 1900 frequency bands."
The first international call using EDGE handsets, made at the conference, originated on the AT&T Wireless GSM network in Dallas, Texas and was made to Sao Paulo, Brazil to another EDGE handset on the TIM Brazil GSM network in a multi-vendor effort by Ericsson, Nokia, Nortel and Motorola.
