Russia-based Avista has developed an answering machine for devices based on Nokia's Series 60 platform, letting Nokia 7650 owners bypass network services - almost - entirely.
As mobile devices grow increasingly advanced, so does the number of services and tasks they can provide to a user - integrating more and more functionality directly into devices and bypassing networking services. Avista's new Answering Machine application for Nokia's Series 60 platform lets Nokia 7650 users do just that, by moving answering machine functionality from the carrier's network to the device itself.

Simply named Answering Machine, the application answers incoming calls after a user-defined period of time, and plays back one of the pre-recorded responses to the active conversation. Users can record several voice messages, and can pick up or hang up at any time while Answering Machine is performing its task. All voice messages are stored locally and are as such available at any time, and the phone number of the caller as well as the date and time at which the message was recorded is also stored.
The company does however warn potential customers of one slight snag with their application; whilst engaging in a call, Answering Machine is not capable of muting the microphone of the 7650 - according to the company due to Nokia's API lacking a function for this particular feature. This results in the caller being able to hear what's going on in the background, however the company says it will update the application as soon as Nokia releases an API which enables muting.
Answering Machine is avilable as a free, 30-day trial from Avista's website, while the full version sells for 15 EUR. The application is available in English, Finnish, Swedish, German, Russian, Hungarian and Italian.
