The ARM-ified version of MobileWizardry's Deity3D engine is finally here, and with it a new blazing fast version of Cascata's Master Thief 3D.
One of the promises of the move of the Palm OS to the ARM processor was faster graphics and cooler games. It's time to mark that down as a promise fulfilled, as the fully ARM native version of MobileWizardry's Deity3D first person shooter engine is now complete, and with it a new version of Cascata's first person shooter Master Thief is available.
Master Thief 1.1 places the player as Nebula, a master of stealth who is hired by assorted companies to steal secret plans from other companies. Nebula must navigate various different locations, avoiding or incapacitating human guards, guard dogs, and robots that look disturbingly like a malevolent R2-D2 in order to steal, or sometimes steal back, precious gems, military secrets, and chemical designs.
Visually the game is stunning. Master Thief is the first Palm OS game to feature a true-3D world, and when running on an ARM-based device such as the Palm Tungsten T the graphics are very smooth and fluid. The game plays at over 40 frames per second at 320x320 resolution, and supports variable lighting effects using a Raycaster engine and particle effects for more realistic explosions and fragmentation. The engine also takes full advantage of the PalmSource advanced audio API for better (and louder) sound effects. The game still runs on Dragonball-based Palm OS devices, albeit without as much eye-candy.
Master Thief itself and the first demo level are free, and additional mission packs are available for $12.00 USD each from the Cascata web site. Two are available now, with a third coming soon.
