Handhelds still have trouble with many desktop file formats, but not for much longer. Cutting Edge Software, Snapperfish, and Dataviz are all working to bring desktop native file support to Palm OS devices this year.
Since the beginning, getting Microsoft Office files and other desktop-style files to work properly on handhelds has been complicated. Palm OS devices use a different file structure than desktops, and Microsoft's Pocket Office suite for the Pocket PC has used a different, reduced file format from its desktop cousin. That meant conversion issues and often proprietary alternate formats, making dealing with desktop files a chore on any handheld. Now, however, several Palm OS companies are working to bring and end to conversion problems once and for all.
 | Quickoffice will integrate with Snappermail for desktop file attachment support
|
Cutting Edge Software and Snapperfish have announced a partnership to integrate their respective products, Quickoffice and Snappermail, to offer complete support for desktop-style files via e-mail attachments. As a continuation of a partnership since early 2002, the two companies intend to add support to allow Snappermail to save attached Microsoft Office files which the user can then open and edit in Quickoffice, without any intermediary server or desktop for conversion, and then send the file again in native Office format as an attachment.
They also hint at later announcements coming this year regarding further partnership developments. Quickoffice is currently bundled with the HandEra 330, and Kyocera has announced plans to bundle Quickoffice with their Kyocera 7135 Palm OS smartphone.
 | DataViz will have its own system, with an API for 3rd parties to support native files via Docs To Go
|
Meanwhile, DataViz, whose Documents To Go office suite is bundled with Palm OS handhelds from Palm and Sony, has announced their intent to offer desktop-native file support in Documents To Go this year. DataViz claims that their system will allow users to view and edit Microsoft Word or Excel files in their native format, regardless of whether the files arrived via desktop syncronization, e-mail attachment, or wireless transfer over Infrared or Bluetooth. It will also allow users to beam files between Palm OS handhelds and Pocket PCs without any intermediary conversion process.
DataViz will be providing an easy way for third party Palm OS developers to tap into the Documents To Go applications that will offer native file format support. This will enable applications such as e-mail clients and file managers to interact with native file formats and Documents To Go.
Cutting Edge Software did not indicate when they expect their system to be available. DataViz says its system will be available sometime this summer.
