The Z1010 is Sony Ericsson's first GSM/UMTS 3G phone, and has it all. Dual displays and cameras, Bluetooth, Memory Stick Duo, J2ME, MMS, Wireless Village, WAP 2.0 and more.
Today at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, Sony Ericsson unveiled its first 3G product - the Z1010 dual mode GSM/GPRS/UMTS phone. With a clamshell design, the Z1010 provides users with extensive imaging, messaging and connectivity features. Optimised for video conferencing and video applications, it features two inbuilt cameras, two displays, video support and a host of other features.

Currently having its video call and streaming video capabilities previewed over a live 3G network in Cannes, the Z1010 will according to Sony Ericsson be first in a line of 3G-products made available for the consumer market. The 3G handset features two displays and two cameras, where the main display is a 16-bit colour display, while a secondary grey scale display is located on the front panel of the phone.
Its integrated camera digital camera will be capable of capturing both still images at VGA resolution and video at QCIF resolution, which can then be sent as MMS or e-mail. There is also a dedicated video call camera placed below the main display, so while the camera is filming the user, the other party can be viewed in the display. Multimedia formats supported range from MPEG4 through H.263, ACC and AMR, and the phone also comes fitted with MP3 playback capabilities.
Additional messaging features in the Z1010 count SMS and EMS, as well as an embedded Wireless Village instant messaging client. The Z1010 also sports a Sony Memory Stick Duo expansion slot, which was recently introduced in the manufacturer's P800 wireless handheld, and will come bundled with one 16 MB card. Also on the feature list for the Z1010 is J2ME, WAP 2.0, polyphonic ringtones and USB and IrDA-compliant infrared connectivity
The Z1010 is currently shipping to operators for interoperability testing (IOT), and will - pending completion of IOT in Q2 - see full commercial availability to support operator launch programmes during the second half of 2003.
Sony Ericsson has been shipping UMTS network test phones to selected operator customers since the middle of 2002, and in September announced, together with Ericsson, the first live, dual mode UMTS/GSM calls with seamless handover between the two modes. The demonstration, which included high data rate in live UMTS/GSM networks, was carried out on Sony Ericsson test units based on the same platform on which the Z1010 is based.
