The latest phone to be announced by the British mobile phone maker runs neither on Smartphone 2002 nor Series 60, but still sports advanced features and a color display.
Whilst still engaged in a lawsuit against Microsoft concerning the now-canceled Z100, British mobile phone maker Sendo is forging forwards with the introduction a new feature phone. Not based on Series 60, but rather on a proprietary operating system, the new dual-band GSM 900/1800 MHz M550 marks a clamshell first for the manufacturer, and also brings a more sophisticated design to the table.

To be the first in a family of new feature phones that will be launched in 2003, the M550 sports several advanced features such as a colour display, polyphonic ringtones, EMS and colour multiplayer games. With an internal antenna and support for GPRS, it will be one of the smallest and most feature-rich colour clamshell phones at only 77 g, providing 180 to 400 hours of standby time and between 120 minutes and 300 minutes of talk or gaming time.
In Sendo's own words, the M550 is targeted at the 'fashion conscious' consumer who is as much interested in how the phone looks and feels as to what it can do. The manufacturer's choice of display for the M550 has landed on a CSTN display with 12-bit color and a 128 pixels x 128 pixel resolution.
The M550 also sports an external, inverse video mono display with a resolution of 96 x 64 pixels, which will allow users to check the time or see who's calling. This particular display cannot be customized, however, Sendo says the internal one can by means of a series of background colour themes.
Polyphonic ringtones are also supported, and the M550 comes with 15 such embedded. It also offers the ability to store up to 500 phone book entries, and through dynamic memory allocation lets users have more direct control over their content as it is shared by not only the polyphonic ringtones and the address book, but also icons and images.
The M550 is GPRS Class 8 with a colour 1.2.1 WAP browser, and offers T9 predictive text input, concatenated (long) SMS and 'Chat', plus full colour EMS. Four pre-loaded Sendo colour games are also embedded, including the over-the-air two player game KombatClub.
The Sendo M550 is estimated to be available in a number of European countries in the second quarter of 2003.
