Chalking up another device win for the Symbian OS camp, Taiwanese manufacturer BenQ recently unveiled its P30 smartphone. Slated for a launch in Taiwan in the third quarter of 2003, the P30 will running the Symbian OS-based UIQ platform, which is also what makes devices such as Sony Ericsson's P800 and Motorola's top-secret, upcoming A920 3G device tick.

Sleek yet powerful; BenQ's new P30
A bare minimum of details were revealed concerning the device, however the information presented should be enough to whet any mobile device lover's appetite. The P30 will come with a 16-bit TFT display, an integrated digital camera with VGA resolution and 16-bit color depth, Bluetooth and GPRS. As with the Sony Ericsson P800, users of the P30 will be able to connect to a PC via USB to synchronize information.

Additionally, the P30 offers support for J2ME and will come with multimedia playback functionality including support for MP3 and MPEG4 audio and video. Strongly reminiscent of the line-up of features found in the Sony Ericsson P800, this is likely to be due to the two devices both running the UIQ platform, which is also what's under the hood of Motorola's top-secret A920 3G device.

Like the P800 and the A920, the user interface of the P30 will be navigated by means of its touch-sensitive display and a stylus. However, it is unclear whether BenQ will mimic the move made by Sony Ericsson for its P800, adapting a range of applications for ease of use in a one-handed scenario.

The BenQ P30 joins a growing crowd of Symbian OS based devices slated for introduction during 2003, including the Series 60-based Nokia N-Gage, Siemens SX1 and Samsung SGH-D700 and the UIQ-based Motorola A920. Currently available devices based on the Symbian OS platform include Nokia's 9200 Communicator range, as well as the Series 60-based Nokia 7650 and 3650 models.
